DAILY ASSIGNMENT RECAP

Day 4 : LIVE REPLAY: https://www.facebook.com/817743257/videos/10157435826363258/

Day 4 of our 5 Days to a Better Behaved Puppy is here!? How’s it going? Be sure you share updates, successes and questions over in the Facebook Group!  It has been so AWESOME seeing the pictures of your pups ROCKIN' their Magic Mats! Love it! I can SEE how proud your pup is to be on that special spot.  How are you feeling?

So now you’re ready to move onto day 4’s training where we’re going to step it up a notch!  Hint: this is where your tracking sheet notes is really going to come in handy. Always go at your own pup’s pace of course, so if you didn’t get to it yet or need to continue to work on day 2’s or 3’s level - then that’s where you start today! Simple.

Today we are really going to focus on adding another layer to the training. This should all still be done in baby steps!  Remember, Rome wasn't build in a day!

Dog training is sort of like running- you have to pace yourself (the dog in this case!).  It’s not a sprint. You may have an end goal in mind (laying down quietly in the kitchen on the mat while you are cooking dinner) however in order to reduce frustration and failure it is important to slowly add on layers of difficulty.  Most people who have never run a race before don’t just go out and try to run 26.2 miles right away. Remember those bricks? We’re laying the groundwork and this is just one building block of training- if you want to continue building you will learn even more in my online training academy.

One way to step things up is to begin to practice your training in different places so your puppy can learn to respond and behave correctly in any situation. We call this generalizing the behavior.  In dog training, generalization means that your dog can apply a concept to many situations; he knows that “Sit!” means he should sit whether he's home, on a loud, crowded sidewalk in the rain, or in a grassy park with squirrels chattering in the trees…...you get the idea. So basically, we want to start in one room training but eventually begin to practice all over the house.

Sound good? Great! Let's get into today's assignment!

Welcome to day 3!  We are officially in the middle of our 5 days to a Better-Behaved Puppy Challenge.  I hope you are beginning to see that there can be magic in the mat!

So far you have learned the importance of how to pair an item (the mat) in your pup’s environment for your puppy as a positive.  In addition, you’re seeing that short, simple sessions prove to be easier and not too difficult to fit into your busy day, right?   There’s also the importance of tracking. If we don’t know where we started, and where we are at the end of each training session it will be hard to truly get to where we want to go without frustration and failure.

First let’s talk about motivation.  We all have it. So does your puppy! So what is it?  For pups, food is their primary reinforcer and most often is what motivates them. Yup. They work for food. We work for money. There are PLENTY of other reinforcers for dogs but for this week’s training we are going to use food as their main reinforcement.

While training what we do want from our pups, we want to be sure that we are paying out accordingly!   With SO many food options out there and brands- it’s hard to know what to use, where to go, what to buy!  No problem! In today’s live in the Facebook Group I’ll be going over some of my favorite healthy dog treats, simple ways to prep and where you can find them!

Here’s a quick sheet to get started with to see what your puppy likes the best!   DOWNLOAD FOOD REWARDS

Welcome to day two! Yay!

Before we dive in to today’s assignment can we chat about Day 1!? Can you FEEL the energy of the group? I can, and I love how everyone is showing up for their pup!  Stick with the training daily and I promise you’ll see how quickly your puppy picks things up (and I’m not referring to things to chew!).  The more often you practice short, fun sessions- the better! Plus, it won’t feel like a chore when you just need to step away for 5 minutes to train your sweet puppy, right!?

Speaking of 5 minutes- here are some ideas of when to get in a quick session!

  • Waiting for the coffee to brew
  • Just before you feed your pup
  • Before you go to bed
  • Before you do your workout
  • When you’re sitting at your desk

Yesterday we worked on just pairing the beginnings of seeing this new mat as a WONDERFUL place to investigate. Did your pup take to it pretty quickly? You saw in the video that Mazie did. Today we’re going to see if we can add a little bit more!

First let’s talk about tracking success.   If we don’t know where we started, and where we are at at the end of each training session it will be hard to truly get to where we want to go without frustration and failure. ( a little failure is okay- because let’s face it- nobody’s perfect!)

Here’s a quick sheet to get you started tracking your training sessions. Download Tracker Now  I’d like you to try your best to mark down when you train, what happened, how long/number of repetitions.  Even the time of day is something to pay attention to. Making quick notes about each session will help so that you can see the progress and where you need to keep working.

And! Here is today’s daily doggy tale video give you a little inspiration- if Angie and her pup can get there, so can you!

                 Challenge Day 2 Assignment (Parts A & B)

Part A: Written Accountability

--->Be sure you watch my live today in the Facebook Group so we can go over today’s assignment and watch Mazie and the Magic Mat Day 2!

---> Keep track of your sessions today (and here on out!) and share the screenshot/photo today in the group for accountability or reply to this email with it!

DAY 1:

The magic will be in the mat this week! Welcome to Day 1 of the 5 Days to a Better Behaved Puppy Challenge!

Congrats on taking the first step to building an even better relationship with your puppy! I’m so excited to have you and your pup be a part of this week’s challenge.  Be sure to hop in the Facebook Group if you’re not yet there so you don’t miss today’s live video at 11am PST!

As a busy mom of 3, wife and business owner… and a dog mom- I know it can be overwhelming and difficult to fit it all in. I get it!  But don’t worry! I’m an expert andI’ve got your back. I’m here to help make things a bit simpler for you and hopefully take some of that stress away when it comes to training!

But first.  We need to run through a few things. Please keep reading. I promise they won’t ALL be this long!

Today’s assignment is key. It’s all about building a foundation.  Just like building a house, you’ve got to lay the groundwork first.  Do you remember the tale of the 3 Little Pigs? You can choose to build it inexpensively to get a quick “overnight fix”- similarly to how the first little piggy made his house out of straw. Or, you can take your time, do it right and build a really solid foundation with your puppy’s training just like the third piggy did when he made his house out of bricks.  Whose house did every piggy envy!? Yep! I don’t even need to tell you the answer, do I. Can you imagine a beautiful, well-built farmhouse style pig house built by Chip and Joanna Gaines? ha!

With this week’s challenge,  I hope you see the value of a building a positive, solid foundation using one of my force-free techniques.  The Magic Mat technique is one of many foundational bricks I teach puppies and dogs! Yes, and for those of you who want to take it to the next level we are going to have a PREMIUM package offered at the end of this week.

Before we dive into the challenge assignment, let’s chat about how dogs learn and how understanding this can really help you through the training process to reduce frustration- at both ends of the leash! :-)

How do dogs learn?
Dogs learn by association.  In other words - their relationship between two given things….just like Pavlov’s dog. Remember him?  The bell ringing meant food was coming. So the sound of the bell had a GOOD, POSITIVE association for the dog (because the food was rewarding for him).  Dogs can have associations that are also negative. Good and bad, scary or fun, negative or positive. However you want to define it.

My goal for you this week is to create a brand new positive association with a mat or towel for your puppy.  I call it the Magic Mat.  We will do this by pairing it with treats!  (We all know dogs have to eat! And most pups love food).

Building a "Magic Mat “ is SO powerful for your puppy to help teach her what DOES work when she's not sure what to do and wants your attention. Cue stress lowering for you too!

(ie: cooking, greeting guests, when you're relaxing on the couch, eating dinner, emptying the dishwasher, at the vet’s office...and more).  Pssst! - what’s up with dogs and the dishwasher, anyhow? Ha ha. Must be all those micro food particles!

How will this Magic Mat challenge help?
There are SO many different areas of training that are important. The goal this week is to focus on one that I believe to be a great stepping stone: The Magic Mat

You will start to build a FUN, positive association so that when your dog chooses his mat WONDERFUL things happen (treats fall from the sky!).  Once trained completely around a variety of distractions, unwanted naughty behaviors such as jumping, biting, barking, chewing start to subside as a result of choosing this alternative special magic spot.

The more you practice daily the more you can expect from your puppy! You are laying the groundwork! Be consistent and patient. :)

Now before we hit your assignments for the day (keep an eye out for downloads!) - here’s today’s daily doggy tale video give you a little inspiration- if Jayshree can get there, so can you!

Challenge Day 1 Assignment  Parts A & B

What will you need this week for the training challenge??
It's all included in a easy-to-read document-- CLICK HERE
along with Part B's Hands-on training lesson.

Part A: Written Accountability
Whether your puppy is 8 weeks old or 10 months old- they’ve had some time to practice some stuff you don’t really want or like. But it’s worked for them! (attention is attention regardless of whether it’s negative or positive)  It’s good to know where we are so we know where we want to go! Grab a sheet of paper, journal and print THIS QUCK QUIZ  and answer the following questions as truthfully as possible. There's no judgement in my group so be as honest as you can!

Now take a picture or screenshot of your answers and post them in the comments of the DAY 1 ACCOUNTABILITY POST!

Part B: Hands on Training Lesson (just 3-7 min at a time!)
GRAB IT HERE for convenient printing.
